Weekend Happenings – Tuesday July 31, 2007

Thursday for lunch Jamie and Gloria O. took me out for my birthday. I help them set up their Quickbooks and more recently their payroll. They think they’re blonde and I think I’m a geek so it works out real well.  I keep telling them eventually payroll paperwork will make sense. It took me a while to get it too!

Gloria regaled us with details from a drama-filled wedding in which her daughter was flower girl. I told her she needs to get a xanga site because that story alone was worth hearing.

Friday night my family took me out to a Chinese restaurant. It’s a really good buffet with a generous portion of seafood. You could eat shrimp to your heart’s content.

Saturday was the wedding of Chris and Chrystal. There were arou nd 150 people at the wedding. They had a nice wedding. I didn’t stay for quite all of the reception since Lois and I were expecting 4 ladies to come in that evening.

The teachers from Antrim were on their way to Pensacola for teachers training and the single ladies stayed at our house. There was much lively talk throughout the weekend! We also were treated to delightful piano playing, too! Sunday evening we went down to the islands for supper. It was raining off and on and we were afraid we wouldn’t be able to have much of a picnic. We eventually found a nice covered table that really belonged to hotel guests but the offices there were closed and we figured not many people would be needing it. If it was a problem, we thought we could tell them we had out-of-state guests and we desperately wanted them to be impressed with Jekyll!!

Since I enjoy taking pictures and you are not opposed to seeing them (parody of Pride and Prejudice quote), here are some from the weekend.

Life Goes On – Saturday July 21, 2007

It’s been a month since we’ve returned from Liberia. So what have I been doing since then? Well, I’m not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring (as one gentleman told me this morning that he was doing).

  • I moved to Ben and Clarita’s house for the summer. They’re in PA and expecting an addition to their family just anytime. Lois moved down from PA and I am so happy to have her home again!!!!
  • My parents had their 50th anniversary so Lois and I took them down to the coast for supper and a relaxing time by the pier on St. Simons. We don’t have a celebration planned yet for them. Daddy is still dealing with blood pressure problems with getting it stablized. I guess people respond to medication differently. His b.p. has been all over the charts. He discontinued the one and isn’t quite as sleepy as he was at one point but still deals with that plus a hoarse voice. Pray for him if you think about it.
  • Committee meetings several nights for youth stuff and VBS
  • Lancaster Children’s Choir was here for a program. Such energy!
  • The evening of Independence Day was spent down in Brunswick and Jekyll Island. We had uncharacteristcally cool weather that day. Just beautiful down on the beach!!!
  • Six nights of VBS  — a really good experience. It was great to see everyone pulling together. The largest number of kids we had was 60, which pretty maxed out the facilities we had. To go any bigger would mean tents. The gnats and mosquitoes make that not seem as attractive as the cool indoors.
  • Trying to make decisions about housing – rent, buy or build??? It definitely keeps life interesting and it sure doesn’t hurt to dream!
  • Company for lunch last Sunday and then again in the evening the youth came over after a change of plans.
  • I finally went digital!! Yeah, finally I broke down and bit the bullet!! The camera of my dreams! It’s so much fun playing around with it. I took some of Ginny’s kids today. Gotta finish those postcards now.

Happy thought of the day: My pictures are back!! Looking through them . . . Oh, that was funny! Remember that place? Smart monkey! Naughty monkey!!! The road was worse than I remembered! Adorable babies! Smelly market! Delicious food! . . . Oh, you’d like to see them, too? *mischievous grin* Give me some time, the posts are coming soon.

Steal of the day: Nice metal skirt hangers for $.20 each (compared to $1.25 for plastic ones).

Quotes of the day: The three rules of speaking: Be sincere, Be brief, Be seated. Preacher on radio
Don’t be an expert in trivial matters. Same preacher on radio

Challenging thoughts of the day: Poem as quoted by Elisabeth Elliot on FOTF’s broadcast today.

No Scar?

Hast thou no scar?
No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand?
I hear thee sung as mighty in the land;
I hear them hail thy bright, ascendant star.
Hast thou no scar?

Hast thou no wound?
Yet I was wounded by the archers; spent,
Leaned Me against a tree to die; and rent
By ravening beasts that compassed Me, I swooned.
Hast thou no wound?

No wound? No scar?
Yet, as the Master shall the servant be,
And pierced are the feet that follow Me.
But thine are whole; can he have followed far
Who hast no wound or scar?

Decision of the day: The digital camera purchase may be closer than I thought a month ago. As much as film developing costs, a digital camera will pay itself off in no time.

Memory of the day: The delicious sweet corn supper from last night. Twenty quarts in the freezer. Boy, do we feel virtuous?!

Tuesday June 19, 2007

I just posted for my 2 African nieces. Visit their sites at Vicki’s Site & Kelly’s Site. Keep your eye on my SIL JoAnn’s Site. They were in Liberia with us and she’ll probably beat me at getting her pics on xanga.

Oh, yeah, my bed felt really awesome last night. After traveling for close to 36 hours, a shower and 10 hours of sleep fit the bill. I went to work today and actually was not all that tired. I’m beginning to feel it now, though, so it’s bedtime for me just shortly. Afterall, in Liberia it is already 1:50 am and that’s late even for a night owl.

I did have at least one dream last night. For some reason I was asked to be in the bridal party at a wedding at Liberia Mennonite Church. I didn’t find out until the day of the wedding and miraculously the bride had sewn a dress for me that miraculously fit. I was frustrated though because I couldn’t find my shoes, though. Odd dream.
