Of Expectations and Meeting Them – Wednesday November 5, 2008

This past weekend was our fourth annual church campout. It’s the second year at this particular campground. There are definitely pros and cons to the facilities. The cabins are rustic. Basically bunks and lockers. No insulation whatsoever. The bathrooms are far from homey or cozy. But the dining hall is well equipped for a group of 100 and the location of the group camp is isolated. The children had great fun riding bike all over the place. The men, if they weren’t eating, were playing football. Except for the break they took for volleyball.  A little exaggeration there but they did play lots of football.

You know, sometimes when we have expectations of something and the occasion does not meet up to them, it leaves a person a little disheartened. Last year we had a lovely time and I was hoping this year would be great as well. It really was!!! The weather was beautiful and not quite as cold as last year. Everyone there seemed to really enjoy themselves. The food was great. And all that good stuff. For those of you who weren’t there, I did think of you and wish you could’ve been there as well!!! Just because we had a great time doesn’t mean you weren’t missed.

There’s something about being in a setting like that that helps you get to know people in a different way. Sitting around a campfire having discussions of all different kinds, enjoying talent night that was filled with humor as well as touching moments all have ways of making life more precious.

I have a very few pics to post here and I will sometime soon post a slideshow. I was inspired on the way home last Sunday evening to try something creative with them and it’s taking me a bit of time to put it together. Plus, we have a bakesale ahead this weekend. Seems we are raising funds for our very own gym. Seems almost too good to be true.

God bless!

Returning Family & Creative Co-workers – Tuesday November 4, 2008

We’ve been waiting for this for some time. Being separated by an ocean for 4 years seems in some ways like a long time and in other ways it seems like it has flown.

Last Tuesday my parents and my sisters Lois and Hannah and I went to help clean the house that they will be living in for a while. Gary’s sister Donna found a house in a small town for them to rent. It is 108 years old and has the character of an old house. Really big windows, a wide porch that wraps around the side, and other features which add to it’s character. It has a lovely bag yard with quite a few big trees. Of course, older homes also tend to have issues with water and electric and this one is no exception. But it has lots of potential to be a homey place and I can’t wait to see it after they are settled in.

Donna treated us to hamburgers and chili dogs from the infamous Troy’s. They really were delicious!! After a day of cleaning with Donna, her boys and Alta, our family (along with our brother Henry who lives there as well and helped clean in the afternoon) went to our cousin Lila’s place for supper. The next day we got some stops in, went back to the rental house to finish up a little cleaning, and then went to the designated spot to meet the shuttle bringing the family in. We weren’t there more than 3 minutes, with plans to go shopping until they came in when they pulled in the parking lot, having caught a different shuttle.

After a delicious Laotian noodle soup supper at the Kauffman home, we headed for home. It’s hard to believe they’ll be within 2.5 hours drive now. Yay hooray!

Apparently a previous occupant wanted to add cable, so, this was their solution to getting it into the back bedroom. Well, at least it will be covered up by shoes or something.

Sorry for the blurry picture. The P&S I had along works a little differently than my Rebel.

On Thursday our job supervisor Mart wanted to know if I wanted to bring out a pizza meal for the framing crew who was just finishing up. Glad to add yet more variety to my week, I was happy to oblige him.

They are currently working on a small bank in a nearby town. It is right beside a main route, and received a special visit from an O S H A “friend” earlier in the week. Those are always such a thrill. Or not.

So my co-worker Reggie who is quite a funny guy built a piece of custom furniture for me to use during lunch time. I always knew he was talented but this time he blew me away. I told his wife who also joined us for lunch that she should get him to build all their furniture.

Gene added the O in the center. Not sure exactly what it’s for but I was kind of scared to ask!

The vault. My apologies if any walls look crooked or distorted. I assure you it’s the camera and the framing crew. The framers have an excellent reputation in the area, both for price and quality.

Of Fruit and Early Mornings – Friday October 24, 2008

This fruit thing has really taken off. I polished up this pitcher that Lois bought at my grandparents estate sale. No one seems to know where it came from. It has no significance as far as sentimental value but it really makes a statement of it’s own.

I stayed up pretty late last night doing some editing and finally decided to call it quits. Well, wouldn’t you know, I woke up extra early this morning and decided to get and do something useful. I immediately thought of apple muffins and then remembered that we had only 1 egg in the house. There goes Murphy’s Law again. The rare occasion that I have plenty of time to do some baking and we have 1 solitary egg in the house.

So I pulled out this recipe I got from my friend Sonya (who I believe might occasionally drop in here). It is a delicious Apple Streusel Muffin recipe. I had to cut the recipe in half, due to the lone egg. I got a total of 6 muffins out of it.

Since I had the inspiration last week to buy sausage (take that, Murphy!) so I made some sausage gravy served over hominy. Anyone else eat hominy? Love that stuff. Sometimes we toss it with crumbled fried sausage and the pour tomato gravy over it.

Anyway, does anyone want to come eat some fruit with me? We have plenty and the grapes are getting kind of ripe. I invited 2 of the high school girls over this evening in case they want to practise some still life shots for student convention next spring. Never too early to start. I believe one young lady got hers printed the day they left for convention.

And yeah, as to where these were taken, we have this 400 year old castle around here (best kept secret ever) and the walls are all cracked and stuff, and it’s got beautiful old furniture in it. And it was such beautiful spot that I had to go back and revisit it with fruit in tow. Kidding, kidding! In all actuality, these were taken somewhere in my house. See if you can figure out what piece of *furniture* the fruit is setting on!!

I have this flash, that is 20-25 years old, for my camera and this is the third camera I’ve used it on and it’s still working fine. I bounced it off the ceiling for nice indirect lighting. Love to bounce the flash. Great fun! (Okay, the geek is leaving now.)

The muffins:

Apple Streusel Muffins
2 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/2 c. butter, melted
1 1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. chopped apples

Mix dry ingredients together. Whisk eggs, butter and vanilla. Add to dry ingredients and fold in apples. Fil muffin tins 3/4 full.

Mix:
1/3 c. brown sugar
1 T. flour
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
1 T. cold butter

together for the streusel topping. Sprinkle it on top of the muffin batter. Bake at 375* for 15-20 minutes. Let cool and the drizzle with icing:

3/4 c. powdered sugar
1 T. milk
1/2 tsp. butter
1/8 tsp. vanilla
dash of salt

I love Pampered Chef’s chopper. It took me about 2 minutes to peel, core and chop 1 medium apple, which makes almost exactly 1 cup.

The batter is quite thick. Only stir it until it’s mixed together. This is before the streusel topping.

Fresh out of the oven:

Mix the icing ingredients together in a ziploc bag. Snip of a tiny bit of the corner and use it as a tip to drizzle it over the muffins.

Yup. They’re really good. Eat them warm and you don’t need anything else on them. But butter and homemade jam is really good too.

Oh yeah. And you might want to see my new fruit pictures. I must say I really, really like them. They’re edited out the wazoo but this is art.

Okay, I goofed something up with the sizing so I’ll have to re-upload them later. Sorry about that!

Fonts – Thursday October 23, 2008

Okay, I am a font freak! Yeah, I know. Pathetic. I love shopping for fonts.

There is something so rewarding in finding the perfect font for the occasion. I’m also highly picky about what fonts should be used where. But don’t let that scare you. That’s just one person’s opinion.

Here’s a rule of thumb, though, for anyone using fonts. If you’re designing a card, brochure, bulletin or flyer, please keep the font use to a dull roar. One title font that can be as ornate as you want it, provided it fits the occasion. And then one text font for the main body. Use italics or bold if you want.

Of Men and Of Women – Wednesday October 22, 2008

Last week was a busy, busy week. It was not only a busy week but a full week. Sounds redundant, I know.  There were good-byes we didn’t want to say and they didn’t want to hear. Supper with old friends, wherein their was much female laughter and chatter, and chatter and laughter, to the puzzlement of some and the amusement of others (men, that is).

In honor of Pastors Appreciation, the youth group worked on one yard and started on another before the sun disappeared. It’s amazing how much work can get done when many hands are busy. I told them our yard isn’t landscaped yet but I didn’t hear any takers.

Heard a very good sermon on Sunday by Jason on Men and Women and being “created in God’s image”, all tied in with the glory of God and headship.

This week has been a little quieter, with two evenings at home already, the better to get rid of my cold. Tonight we are going out to eat for my dad’s 72nd birthday, and tomorrow evening supper out for a friends birthday.

I feel much better and even got creative last night. Tried something completely new for me. I decided to try something for an assignement and here’s what I got. I want to find some old crockery or old dishes and try some more later. Got Fruit?

Tell me which you prefer of the color on the canvases. The first one had more of a tan background, the second a green. I can’t decide which one I like best.

And this is for Ginny: If I drive past your house and honk my horn, and no one is there to hear it, did I really honk? Miss y’all bunches!!!
