It’s past time to wrap this up. 🙂 Let’s not count the years.
For the last 4 days of our stay, we had a bedroom up on a hill above Bedford Basin. You couldn’t exactly see the water because of the tall trees. I actually got pics of our lodging this time, due to the fact that I had offered to take pictures of it for the airbnb host, who needed some better pics. And they I realized that I had forgotten my super wide lens and as usual, when we arrived at our house, we came in and “made ourselves at home” immediately and between the 2 things, I didn’t end up sending any pics. It was a wait-and-see agreement anyway. But, here are a few pics.
We had reserved a house close to Peggy’s Cove, anticipating spending some down time there, and being able to beat the crowds to Peggy’s Cove for pictures. We had to re-arrange our lodgings so had to cancel that house and get this one on the outskirts of Halifax.
The house was an older one but a very homey 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom place to settle in for a few days.
We had 2 full days to see the area. We had made arrangements to take a sunset whale watching boat tour out of the beautiful town of Lunenberg. We hit Peggy’s Cove, which is more or less on the way to Lunenberg, mid-morning. It is a very popular place, which is why I had hoped to see it early morning or late evening.

They’ve built a platform to view the lighthouse from this angle ^. Some people are sad that they added the platform. I think that if they are going to have thousands of people come through, they may as well build some infrastructure and keep at least some of the people off the rocks.
They have a nice visitor’s center and a number of nice shops down by the water.
I had thought that maybe I would try to do a sunrise run the following morning but with it being an hour away, I crossed it off the list by that evening.
We ate at a restaurant along a river a few miles from the cove. They had delicious lobster chowder, that Lois and I split. It did not disappoint!!
For my main dish, I got some kind of fish cakes and fries. The description mentioned that the cakes had potatoes and dried fish. Well, I mostly tasted potatoes, so I had double potatoes for lunch!! 🙂
We drove down to Lunenberg in time to do some shopping. There are several streets that run parallel to the harbor front and there are lots of restaurants and shops to enjoy.

The waterfront is absolutely charming from the water! The whale watching tour left from the harbor so we had good views of it from the water. If you don’t want to do the tour, there are places across the water that have good viewpoints.
It was a lovely evening out on the water and the sea was flat enough to give us a smooth ride. We only saw 1 what and the picture above is all we saw of it.
They also took us to a nearby spot where we saw seals, fairly up close and personal.
We came back into Lunenberg just as dusk was settling in.
Evening lights took it from charming to downright beautiful!! And quaint! And picturesque!
Our final full day was a Saturday, and it started out as a stormy one, with the power going out for a bit. We were all about toured by now and elected to keep it low key and see a bit of Halifax. We found a farmers market, which was very interesting, down by the pier area! I bought some whipped maple, aka maple cream. I don’t remember having it before in my years living in Canada (3, back in the 90s). It is delicious on toast!!
Beside the farmers market is an immigration museum, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, which we toured. It is at the same spot some cruise ships dock, which makes it very convenient. There was also a large shopping market next door (also convenient for cruise foot traffic!), a good place to get last minute souvenirs. I got a sweatshirt, which I thought was a good idea. When we got back to VA on Sunday for my nephew’s wedding, it was 100*, more or less and I laughed at my sweatshirt souvenir. I do live in the deep south, after all! Well, when winter came and I was so glad I had bought it!
Before our flight on Sunday, we had a little time to blow, so we drove to the other side of the harbor from Halifax, past Dartmouth to Fisherman’s Cove. It was a neat place with shops and a great place to get ice cream, but we were there a little ahead of their opening hours. It was still a good place to hang out for a bit. We made a stop to get a picture of part of the Halifax Harbor.
After a stop a thrift store, we headed back to the airport to fly out. I had hoped to get a chance for 1 last poutine at the airport, but the setup for flights to the US were a little different. There was one large gate area with several gates. We went through customs before we arrived at the gate area, and didn’t have to go through customs when we arrived back in the states! Worked great for us, do to us having more time before our flight then after. However, the gate area didn’t have the usual airport kiosk restaurants so didn’t have 1 last poutine. Oh well! I had had all I needed already!
Our time in the Canadian Maritimes was delightful and we all enjoyed seeing a new area for all of us! So many things left to see “another time.”
