Update

Yes, I finally have DSL at home. No, that doesn’t mean I have more time to post. I keep thinking of things I want to write about but inspiration is not lining up very well with free time. When one has a post just itching to be written, and one is about to fall over from weariness from too many late nights, one must resist the urge to crank up the computer and write. Rest is more important. So is cleaning up my room. Laundry from last week begs to be folded and put away.

But.

We are in our new office now. It is not finished but it is very exciting to have plenty of room!!! Cabinet guys have been hinting for cookies ever since they made sure the kitchen cabinets were finished first. Today cabinet guys were lamenting the fact that they could not smell cookies baking. I told them every day they keep bringing more cabinet pieces, their chances of smelling cookies increases. First we have to get an oven.

And another fridge.

Inadequacy

Said my boss the cabinet guys this morning, “You didn’t measure right for the fridge opening.” Humor goes along way when things are less than ideal!  Oh, and the cabinet doors will be getting pulls on them.

But let me tell you what AT&T pulled with our whole internet thing. Go to their website, put in our phone number and “Congratulations! You qualify for DSL Lite.” And only lite. Specially introductory price even. So we order the service. With DSL Lite you do not get a free modem. It would be cheaper to get a modem elsewhere but a previous experience doing so made me think it was worth getting their modem. Sure enough. Plug it in. Works great. Speed is tolerable. Far better than no internet. Far better than dialup.

I went onto their website a week or so later just to see if an upgrade was available. Sure enough, the plans that would’ve included a free modem are available. So I upgraded. Checked the download speed and it is on par. Yay! We can get DSL Extreme 3.0. Could get 6.0 but don’t feel like shucking out any more $.

But. We don’t get the free modem. And we don’t get the special introductory prices on DSL Extreme that are offered to NEW customers. I wonder if talking to customer service would help at all.

Good night to all!

Coming Soon!

to my home.

Internet access. The DSL kind. Lite though it may be it will be most welcome. We’ve been using a wireless card from Alltel and that service was pretty expensive, especially for no better tower coverage than we have at our house.

The wireless card finally quit working this summer and since AT&T has been telling us that it is coming our direction, we decided to cancel the service until we can get DSL. We could even see them burying the cables, but it seemed like it would. never. get. here.

Many sighs have been uttered in our home. My sister has uttered threatenings and slaughterings to her computer, but I try to convince her it’s not the computer’s fault.

Friday, I checked online to see if we had access at our number and what delight passed from my lips when I discovered that we do have it available!!! My boss’ wife was afraid her 2-year-old daughter had gotten into something and that I was freaking out over that. Nope, they were joyous sounds!

I’m still kind of holding my breath until it is actually up and working after this weekend when it is supposed to be activated. I should be able to update a little more often and get some things checkmarked off my list. One being possibly a move to WordPress (?). Anyone have any opinions as to why I should or shouldn’t?

I had the seniors from church over recently for supper and we got to talking internet access. They ALL have DSL at their homes but barely know how to use their computers. Here I sit, with no access at all. We had to chuckle over that one.

Well, adios amigas!

TS Lee

We got a very nice rain from TS Lee and cooler, nearly-fall weather with it!! We went walking last night and almost didn’t break a sweat. The sunset was gorgeous. While we were walking it was bright gold against clear blue skies. By the time I got home where my camera was, it was turning red.

This still doesn’t capture the beauty! And this morning the weather is deliciously cool! Thank you, Lord!!

It’s That Time of the Year

wherein a large storm (aka hurricane) approaches, gets us a little excited, and then decides to head north instead. We’re not complaining though. It looks like it could be a rough one and even though the rain would be nice, we don’t mind it heading away from us. We be even more okay with it if it heads back out to sea and totally misses land. I believe people on the North Carolina coastline are leaving for higher ground.

A couple of weeks ago I was driving around for a bit one evening, trying to find a subject for a photo assignment. Didn’t get quite what I wanted for that but got some other shots.

It was apparent that a storm was building. Here is something I’ve seen only a few times though it probably happens often and I just don’t see it.

 Stormy Night Aug 8 - 6

From what I can tell, the sun is hitting some moisture between the clouds and the sun must hit it just right, creating the same effect as a rainbow. The photo is SOOC, in case your wondering. I was driving and shooting at the same time which I wouldn’t recommend for you or me.

Just before it got dark the bands of clouds were really forming and looking ominous.

So I found a wide open field to shoot a pano and watch it come rolling in.

Stormy Night Aug 8 - 3

Alas, it got very electrical and windy but we didn’t get much rain. I like saying alas. What, you thought it was cheesy?

So, all you folks in the path of the storm, stay safe!!

Happy, Happy, Happy Children

Okay, some of you have heard me quote him: “But doctor, we want happy, happy, happy children!”

Click on the link below to watch him (Dr. Kevin Leman) say it in this broadcast (plus other parenting tips):

Your Family Live by Focus on the Family

I especially like the part near the end where he makes a guess on the birth order of the young boy who is so thankful for all his parents have done for him. Classic!
