Building our own house has been interesting to say the least. No, nothing dramatic has happened and our house is sailing along. The framers did have to come back and add some extra supports that have recently been added to requirements in construction to help the building withstand winds up to 100 mph.
To give you an idea of what’s been happening with it the last few weeks:
Sept. 26
Oct. 15
The siding is now finished the roofing will be finished by tomorrow. For now I’ll give you a picture of our front door and let you give us opinions on what color the front door should be. The colors are a little hard to see. Somehow I usually am at the house in either the early sunlight hours or late sunlight hours so I have a hard time getting a good color capture.
The siding is green, the shutters black, trim white and shingles dark charcoal gray. The front door has wrought iron in it which is hard to see in this picture. I’ll try to get a better picture to put up.
Being involved with the construction is educational, as well as a chance to rub shoulders with interesting people! Not wildly colorful but interesting nonetheless. Yeah, Wes, I’m talking about you! Just kidding! No, I haven’t forgotten about the cheesecake yet!!
The last few weeks have been busier than I should’ve let them get (according to my sis! ). This past week has seen me at home several nights which is a good thing. It is a hard thing to think up a fun or “giving” activity only to have to say “no, I’ve got to have some down time.” So a few highlights of the last couple of weeks.
- Helping Reggie’s move to their new house. They built one lot up the road from us. We’re also right around the corner from Wes & Ginny.
- Weekend in Antrim with friends. A fast and furious trip. 24 hours on the road, 48 hours there. Shopping in “Homes Konty”. Lunch with friends there.
- Making decisions about house things and writing lots of checks!
- An evening with Ginny, Crysta and Lois on Wes’ overnight run night.
- Memorable photo shoot on Jekyll with no-see-ems and biting flies causing us all to nearly lose it! So sad, God gave us a beautiful sunset but the bugs made it almost impossible to enjoy it on the beach. Off didn’t begin to deter them. Enjoyed supper at a Mexican restaurant later.
- My brother Henry came over for Daddy’s birthday, his 71st b.d.
- Erin & Freida came last weekend. I didn’t get to spend as much time with them as I would’ve liked. Freida and I did do lunch at Stories on Monday.
- Monday evening had Carol Yoder and Loretta Fisher from Fairplay girls camp here overnight. They were on their way home from a supplies drop-off to a group of girls on a canoeing trip on the Suwannee River.
This weekend some cousin from SC are coming for the weekend. We are very excited about pulling this off, after talking about it for a long time.
This post feels a little disjointed but I’ve gotta keep moving. A few pictures from “homes konty”.
Wow! Your house is going up fast! I really like the style. I’m not a good one for picking out colors, but what about a wine-colored door?
The Beef Jerky sign recalls a story by xangan, “sarjon.” They were living in Holmes County many years ago. One day he overheard one fellow trying to convince another about the evils of tobacco. The man apparently referred to Scripture to bolster his argument. Thereupon, the tobacco user said, “Oh, but you can read where it says we should use tobacco.”
“Oh, no, you can’t!” the first fellow insisted.
“Yep,” the other came back. “On Apple Butter John’s barn it says ‘Chew Mail Pouch.'”
Come to think of it, those signs are rare, if not altogether gone today.

BTW. We’re happy to see your house coming along so well. Continue to post pix.
I’m so excited about your house!!!
I think probably every sentence I write will have exclamation marks tonight and maybe for a week…my camera came tonight!!! See, I didn’t even mean to do that (think period). Did it! Okay. Enough. Anyway, I’m THRILLED.
Your brother Phill stopped in last night and brought us two dozen eggs and local honey. Very kind, I thought.
It’s hard to get over how much different the lot looks than it did when we were there! I wish our house could have gone up that fast, but that’s how it goes when you do so much of the work yourself. If it were me picking out the door color, it would probably be hunter green, or maybe darker. That picture of the back reminds me of a church 😉
Is that a picture of our elusive sister-in-law’s house in Holmes Konty? You know, the one we’ve never met? 😉
I think the front door should probably be red. I like the design of your house, too. The back reminds me a little of your Grandma, Amanda’s house in Abbeville. I loved the layout of her house and the long porch/car port all along the back.
Wow! I’d say things are happening fast! …glad for you…looks like a nice layout!
Wow! Your house is speeding along. That’s great! Ok, I’m a traditionalist, I’d paint the door black.
Wow, awesome! good job to you and Lois!!
Wow, things are speeding right along for you! Door? I was gonna say dark red. Or maybe that would look too Christmas-y. But red is pretty. Or perhaps dark green? That is the color of my front door. Love your “Homes Konty” pictures!
Canon 40D. Hey, there’s a big photography studio in Abbeville closing down. They’re having an auction on Saturday, selling everything from lights to backgrounds to furniture, stools, tables, props……… Maybe you’d want to come up? I wish I’d have money to blow.
I love following your houes building with your pictures! Looks exciting! I miss ya’ll too and think of ya’ll often. You’re welcome for the gift. =) May you find many good deals. Me, Jul, mom & Carm are thinking of coming down in 2 weeks. Hopefully we’ll get it all decided before too long and scoot on down to south GA. Hope you’re having a wonderful week! Love you.
jamie
cute house….. and I will have to say maybe a cream color door or maybe you don’t have that color scheme anywhere else? I think it would look very warm and inviting with your green color siding… some shade of dark red would be pretty too. Also love your pictures of Holmes County. Those need “postcard” attached to them.
I meant to comment back when you posted but never got around to doing it until now. Perhaps you have already painted your door but here is my suggestion…. how about a natural wood stain color?
You are definitely ahead of us…….we’re still framing. Just about finished with that and ready for the roofers as soon as we pick out our shingle color. Picking out all the colors can be a huge challenge…..my brain gets tired some times! Looks good….we’ll have to come over and see it when we come down for Thanksgiving!
Your house is going too fast! No fair!! =) Looks like it’ll be really cute!
